The Nehru Nagar Pond in OMR, Chennai

The Nehru Nagar pond is located in between Thoraipakkam & Karapakkam on the arterial Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR). A beautiful water body which definitely deserves more urban attention. An oasis in Chennai.

At first glance one might wonder, why this pond was taken up for restoration. Ducks swimming, tall tress around and abundance of water. But when we look beneath the sheets of water , all that we’d find is construction debris. All these debris have been dumped in to the water body over the years, despite that the pond has retained water.

E.F.I in association with the Greater Chennai Corporation (G.C.C) and Hexaware Technologies took on the restoration of the Nehru Nagar Pond.

The construction debris dumped in the water holding area were removed, the embankments were strengthened, protective fencing on the road facing side were established and also the Palm tree islands in this pond were left intact and only invasive weeds were removed.

In addition to that, this pond will also have a herbal garden protected with a bamboo fence on one side of it along with bird nests being installed on the existing tress.

The transformation of the Nehru Nagar pond, just in time for the 2019 monsoon rains had pumped in optimism among the local community. This community based conservation efforts in reviving neglected water bodies is much needed given the climate change induced adversities that humanity is experiencing world over.

We thank G.C.C for their administrative support and Hexaware Technologies for their funding support in this restoration effort!
