E.F.I., in collaboration with Greater Chennai Corporation has transformed this small land parcel inside the TNHB 1500 Residential flats into a Sponge Park. A nature-based solution designed to reduce localized flooding, enhance groundwater recharge, and strengthen Chennai’s urban water resilience.
As Chennai continues to face the twin challenges of flooding during intense rainfall and water scarcity during dry periods, innovative Blue-Green infrastructure projects like this are becoming increasingly important. By addressing water demand, supply, climate resilience, and ecological restoration together, Sponge Parks offer a sustainable pathway toward a water-positive city. This restored landscape now functions as living hydro-infrastructure, capturing and storing rainwater while supporting groundwater stability. Complemented by native afforestation efforts, it has also created a new nature-based public space for the community.
What is a Sponge Park?
A Blue-green infrastructure that functions like a giant sponge-designed to absorb, retain, filter, and
slowly release rain and stormwater to reduce flooding, replenish groundwater, and improve water quality.
