Dasarikuppam Thangal – Forgotten to Formidable

Picturesque hillock-valley-draining canals and intermediate lakes, all at a distance of 22kms from the closes urban hotspot of Chennai. As suburban villages transform into modern settlements, the natural topography takes a hard beating. Hanumanthapuram is a fine example of a natural art ready to be ruined with artificial ‘intelligence.’ Dasarikuppam thangal would not hold any water, as its embankment were only a mere 5ft high with a top width 1-1.5m prior to restoration. Water from the upstream would flow through this lake down towards the neighbouring villages, leaving resident farmers of this belt high and dry in 2 weeks. The restoration efforts at Dasarikuppam has now defined this lake, given it a proper storage and above all ensure the possibility of a habitat revival. Check the transformation below:

Hanumanthapuram’s Dasarikuppam would have been the easiest victim to unchecked encroachment in 5-7 years. The recipe for disaster from dumping to occupation was just around the corner. Preventive restoration is cost effective, long-lasting and result oriented compared to aesthetic improvements on eye candy initiatives. #TogetherTowardsTomorrow.
