Empowering Erode’s Conservation Champions

250 young environmental champions from 9 different institutions participated in the Erode Edition of India Environment Masterclass that took place at VET Institute of Arts and Science at Thindal in Erode. The session started at 9 am with registration. The hall was jam-packed as we moved to the first session after the formal inauguration session. The introduction provided an overview of what the Masterclass is about. School Students were more enthusiastic and were interested in providing answers and spreading ideas. 

Leadership training sessions included the concept of gamification in which the students were engaged in games to understand self-realization as well as scientific and situational decision-making. Documentaries of the Turtle and Straw, Swastik Stepwell, and Vrishabhavathi River were portrayed to illustrate environmental awareness, indigenous environmental architecture, harms of single-use non-biodegradable substances. 

The Visionary King Kalingarayan was discussed and his vision situational leadership quality and logical decision-making ability to build the Kalingarayan Canal to provide water set an example to the students 

The Avalpoonthurai, Vellode bird sanctuary, Kalingarayan Canal, River Kaveri, and ponds of Pallipalayam were the environmental hotspots discussed in the session to build awareness to students on what kind of negative impact is been caused to these water bodies due to human interaction with non-biodegradable substance use. 

Kalingarayan and his vision for Kaveri and water conservation was the topic for street play in which the students added their creativity which spread a message of awareness.
