E.F.I’s I.E.MC in Alappuzha: Building Tomorrow’s Conservation Leaders

ഇനി വരുന്നൊരു തലമുറയ്ക്ക് ഇവിടെ വാസം സാധ്യമോ………         മലിനമായ ജലാശയം……                               അതി മലിനമായൊരു ഭൂമിയും ……

125 students from six different institutions participated in the I.E.MC Alappuzha. Energetic, young, and vibrant students actively participated in the event for Alappuzha and her environment. Team E.F.I. has engaged the students in different activities through the medium of gamification to Engage, Learn, Unlearn and Relearn. Students were advised how their talents could be used for nature conservation and awareness too.

On a fine morning after the Pongal holidays, E.F.I.’s travel destination was Alappuzha, known as the Venice of the East. The town attracts people with its water routes and water stories. The geography of the town is quite complicated, as one has to cross bridges to reach the destination. But in simple terms, the geography is “West is Arabian Sea and East is Vembanad Lake”.

The students were divided into groups by playing a self-realization game. There were six groups formed. After the group formation, the students were led to another game called decision-making, in which they were given a situation to think about. They have to assign specific roles and should come up with the decisions they think are suitable for the situation. In this game of self-characterization, students are also taught about values and morals, as well as one’s responsibility to their surroundings.

Documentaries were screened in between the sessions to raise awareness among the students about the use of single-use plastic, balloons, and other non-degradable materials that can play no part in the life of a human being. One such video was that of Bangalore’s Vrishabhavathi River and a turtle removing a plastic straw from its nose.

After lunch, the session was “Environment and Art”. Students who were grouped were given a theme named “Single Use Plastic and Environment”. Students have brought up different themes that portray how the single use of plastics is harming the environment and also the ways that people show negligence towards handling waste.

The session ended with a group photo and a lot of memories.
