Polichalur North Pond Restoration – Blue Green Chengalpattu

Pozhichalur is a densely urbanised locality in the Tambaram region, situated near Chennai Airport. Within this urban landscape lie two significant waterbodies, the Pozhichalur North Pond and South Pond. Following the successful restoration of the South Pond, the Pozhichalur North Pond has now also been restored, strengthening the area’s network of urban waterbodies.

Over the years, the North Pond had deteriorated into a dumping ground and was extensively invaded by Neltuma juliflora (Prosopis juliflora), severely affecting its ecological function and water-holding capacity. Under #BlueGreenChengalpattu initiative, in collaboration with the Chengalpattu District Administration, and with funding support from CAMS, E.F.I. undertook the restoration of the waterbody through systematic removal of accumulated garbage and invasive vegetation, along with desilting and other restoration interventions.
