An urban spread is like a volcanic lava that would just take over everything on its path. Chennai being the active urbcano*, is spreading its city charm in every direction and is swallowing suburban natural characteristics. Kolathur near Mambakkam with its Pidari thangal was on the verge of being turned into a large celebration ground for religious congregation, a cricket play ground and eventually few housing and other concrete structures. Volcanic lava can be diverted with limited success, but controlling and stopping the urbcano is next to impossible, but thats what has been successfully done here at Kolathur’s Pidari Thangal. This lake got its definition, boundary and now a proper storage area. Pidari thangal has shown the way that with water urbcano can be shown its path and place.

Urbcano – Coined on the 31st of December 2025. A term that represents the unchecked take over of surrounding land by an urban settlement.
