Restoration of Datha Lake – BlueGreen Hosur

Datha Lake serves as a critical wetland ecosystem and natural aquifer, playing a vital role in regional groundwater recharge. However, rapid urbanization and prolonged neglect have driven the waterbody to the brink of ecological collapse. Dense infestations of invasive flora—primarily Parthenium, Castor, and Prosopis juliflora—have aggressively colonized the embankments and lakebed, choking native vegetation and destabilizing local biodiversity. Concurrently, untreated domestic sewage discharge has severely contaminated the water column, degrading water quality while creating acute public health and environmental hazards. To safeguard the lake’s hydrological capacity and ecological integrity, the Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I), in partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu, initiated a comprehensive eco-restoration project to revive Datha Lake into a sustainable, resilient freshwater asset.

The eco-restoration of Datha Lake highlights how targeted nature-based interventions can effectively reverse wetland degradation in rapidly expanding industrial corridors. By integrating structural desilting and bund fortification with ecological enhancements like recharge pits and nesting islands, E.F.I and the Government of Tamil Nadu have secured Datha Lake’s long-term sustainability. Today, the restored waterbody stands as a rejuvenated blue-green sanctuary—buffering Hosur against water scarcity, sustaining local aquifers, and providing a thriving habitat for regional wildlife.
