Sivagangai district, a drought-prone region in southern Tamil Nadu, carries a rich legacy of resilience shaped by its landscapes and culture. Despite harsh climatic conditions, the region is blessed with thousands of man-made lakes, sacred groves, grasslands, rivers, and hillocks that have sustained life for generations. Named after the legendary warrior queen Velu Nachiyar, this expansive land parcel lies beside Kanjirangal Lake, just about 2,000 metres from the Sivagangai Collectorate, and comes under the Forest Department. Over the years, the site had slipped into neglect becoming vulnerable to garbage dumping, invasive weed growth, encroachments, and antisocial activities.
With the support of AstraZeneca and the Sivagangai District Administration, this degraded landscape is now being transformed into a thriving blue-green space through afforestation and ecological restoration.
