Tumakuru is an emerging urban center located just 60 km from India’s IT capital, Bengaluru. The Bengaluru – Tumakuru corridor reflects a pattern seen across the country, much like Mumbai – Kalyan, Chennai – Chengalpattu, and Delhi – Gurugram.
Just outside the 5 km radius of the city limits, the landscape shifts dramatically, from concrete buildings to farmlands, from cars to bullock carts, and from apartments to rolling hillocks. Surrounded by numerous water bodies, lakes play a crucial role in sustaining the city’s water resources. While traditionally these lakes supported agriculture, those within the city limits are now under increasing stress from anthropogenic pressures and rapid urbanization.
Baddihalli Kere, Shettikere, TPK Road Kere, Kayathasandra Kere, and Annami Kere are some of Tumakuru’s urban water bodies that continue to recharge groundwater and support local needs. However, they face severe challenges such as sewage inflow, invasive weeds, neglect, garbage dumping, silt deposition, and encroachment.
Shettihalli Kere, situated in the southern part of Tumakuru city, is one such lake.
E.F.I, in collaboration with INTEL TECHNOLOGY INDIA PVT. LTD. and the Tumakuru District Administration,
took on the task of restoring this water body.

Amidst the fast-growing world of technology, distracting mobile phones, and towering buildings, nature’s wonders often remain hidden behind the noise of modern life. Urban lakes, too, face this neglect burdened by sewage, garbage dumping, encroachments, and pollution. Yet, they continue to give back selflessly, offering habitats for biodiversity, recharging groundwater, and regulating the local climate.
