BlueGreenChengalpattu – Ozhalur Kadaperi Restoration story

Long before highways, factories, IT parks, and townships spread across its land, Chengalpattu was celebrated for its water, forest, wildlife, trees, and coastline. The district’s landscape was adorned with shimmering lakes, winding streams, lush forests, and fields sustained by the mercy of the monsoon. These lakes were never just waterbodies; they formed a cascading system that captured the rains and released them slowly across its landscapes guiding farmers on when to sow and harvest, while offering birds, trees, and wildlife the space to thrive and flourish.

Chengalpattu stands as proof that nature and people have always shared the same rhythm,
and if nurtured with care, they will continue to dance together for generations. In recent years, Chengalpattu has witnessed remarkable environmental progress, thanks to the dedicated efforts of government officials committed to conservation.

E.F.I has had the opportunity to work closely with the District Administration to conserve and protect countless water bodies, afforestation sites and engaged many citizens in environmental conservation work through volunteering activities.

Between two hillocks, in a quiet valley near the city, lies Ozhalur Kadaperi. Over the years, due to neglect and lack of maintenance, this water body struggled with the rapid spread of invasive species like Prosopis juliflora and Ipomoea carnea. The lake also faced severe challenges from garbage dumping, encroachment, reduced storage capacity, and heavy siltation, which limited its ability to support local needs and withstand periods of drought.

With support from the Chengalpattu District administration, Nexus malls and E.F.I. took on the task of restoring Ozhaloor Kadaperi to its natural state.
