In the heart of Chennai’s Egmore, within the premises of the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA), lies a hidden gem known as the “Mermaid Pond.” Despite being surrounded by the busy streets and the bustling railway station of Egmore, this pond serves as a place of tranquility within the lush greenery of the YWCA campus. Over the years, however, neglect had taken its toll, with the accumulation of heavy silt and poor structural integrity. This prompted E.F.I to embark on a restoration project to revive the pond to its former splendor. For the first time in 25 years.

The pond suffered from a significant nutrient overload, primarily stemming from organic debris shed by the adjacent trees and the surface runoff. This led to rampant algal blooms and a decline in its overall condition. Further exacerbating the issue was the lack of proper inflow and irregularities in its topography, resulting in inadequate water retention capacity. Additionally, traces of zinc were detected in the pond water, likely originating from runoff from nearby power transmission wires.
The restoration process encompassed several crucial steps, including dewatering to facilitate the cleansing of the pond’s surface and construction of a two-step embankment to ensure structural integrity and stability.

A nesting island was constructed to provide a home for avian species like the Cormorant, which is observed to be frequenting the pond.

Furthermore, bamboo fencing along the elevated embankment has been erected. A pathway made of jute and stone was made along the bunds to avoid soil erosion and make sure that the bunds stay intact.

These restoration efforts have created a durable and eco-friendly habitat conducive to various life forms, fostering a delicate balance within the ecosystem. Through careful planning and implementation of sustainable practices, not only have we seen an increase in biodiversity, but the area also serves as a vital habitat. Furthermore, this enriched environment promotes soil health and water quality, which is essential for the overall well-being of the region.
