Inauguration of Hulikunte Kere: A Step Towards Water Resilience in Tumkur

The inauguration of Hulikunte Kere marked a transformative moment towards a Blue-Green Tumkur! E.F.I has been on an ambitious effort in reviving rural water bodies in the water-stressed zone of Tumkur, Karnataka. Due to its location in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats and close proximity to the Cauvery basin’s upper catchment, Tumakuru city lies in a semi-arid zone where rainwater is the primary source of fresh water.

This restoration project, a partnership between E.F.I, EFL and the Government of Karnataka, is merely the beginning of an inspiring journey of collaborative efforts that will revive Tumkur’s precious water bodies and our commitment to #CareForKere.

The inauguration ceremony saw a heartening turnout from EFL members and local residents, who gathered to celebrate the revival of this vital water body. The enthusiasm was palpable as EFL members engaged with the villagers, listening to their concerns and exploring sustainable, water-based solutions to suit their needs.

A Three-Zoned Approach to Water Management

One of the standout features of the Hulikunte Kere restoration is its innovative three-zone design, strategically created to enhance water quality.

  1. Segmented Zone: This area is specifically designated for the collection of inflowing, contaminated water, ensuring that the lake remains as clean and sustainable as possible.
  2. Stagnant Zone: Here, the collected water undergoes natural treatment processes, allowing for the breakdown of pollutants and fostering a healthier aquatic ecosystem.
  3. Deposition Zone: This final zone serves as a repository for clean water, ensuring a steady supply that supports both local agriculture and wildlife.

Community-Driven Water Conservation

The revival of Hulikunte Kere would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the local community. Their active involvement in the project has not only led to a successful restoration but has also fostered a sense of ownership and pride among the villagers.

The return of native fish to the lake is a positive sign of ecological restoration, and local farmers and cattle owners are already reaping the benefits, utilizing the enhanced water supply for irrigation and livestock.

The project stands as a model for future initiatives in Karnataka, particularly in areas grappling with water scarcity. As a part of the rainshadow region, Tumkur faces unique challenges related to water availability, making the revival of Hulikunte Kere an essential step towards water resilience.

Looking Forward

The inauguration of Hulikunte Kere is not just an end but a beginning—a starting point for ongoing collaboration between E.F.I, EFL, the Government of Karnataka and the community. As we look ahead, the focus will remain on monitoring the health of the water body and ensuring that it continues to serve the local population effectively.

With continued commitment and support, Hulikunte Kere will flourish, becoming a thriving hub of biodiversity and a vital resource for the people of Tumkur. Together, we can ensure that this water body not only meets the needs of today but also secures a sustainable future for generations to come.
