The inauguration of Milakathamman Lake was graced by the presence of Kelambakkam Panchayat President, Tmt. Rani Ellappan, alongside members of the Panchayat and representatives from UST. Together, we witnessed the transformation of a vital water body that was once choked with garbage and invasive weeds.

As part of the celebration, 100 seed balls were dispersed, and saplings were planted, contributing to the growth of native plant species. In recognition of UST’s invaluable financial support for this project, shawls were distributed by the Panchayat to the UST members, symbolizing our gratitude for their commitment to revitalizing the lake.

கேளம்பாக்கம், சென்னையின் தென்கிழக்கே உள்ள ஒரு பிரதான புறநகர் பகுதி. பல நீர்நிலைகளை கொண்ட இந்த ஊர், சென்னையின் வளர்ச்சிக்கு ஈடுகொடுக்கும் விதத்தில் தனி பாதையில் வளர்ந்து-மாறி வரும் பகுதி. சிறு குளங்கள் முதல், பெரிய ஏரி வரை நன்னீர் ஆதரங்களால் சூழ பட்ட ஊர் கேளம்பாக்கம்.

கடந்த இரண்டு ஆண்டுகளாகவே இந்த நீர் ஆதாரங்களை அறிவியல் முறைப்படி மீட்டெடுப்பதில் நகர நிர்வாகமும்- EFI தொண்டு நிறைவனும் ஒன்றிணைந்து செயலாற்றி வருகின்றன. 

வண்ணான் குளம், வண்ணான் ஏரி, தாழாந்தாங்கல், பூந்தாங்கல் போன்ற நீர் ஆதாரங்கள் புனரமைக்கப்பட்டு. அதை தொடர்ந்து சுமார் 20 acre பரப்பளவில் உள்ள மிளகாத்தம்மன் ஏரி புனரமைக்கும் பணி தொடங்கப்பட்டது. 

குப்பை-கழிவுகள் அகற்றப்பட்டு, சீமை கருவேலன்கள் வேரோடு பிடுங்கப்பட்டு, நீர் தேக்க பகுதி தூர்வாரப்பட்டு, ஏரி சுற்றிலும் கறைகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டு, நீர் தேக்க கிணறுகள், பல்லுயிரினங்களுக்கான தீவுகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டு, மிளகாத்தம்மன் ஏரி புத்துயிர் பெற்றுள்ளது. 

நிறுவனங்களின் சமூக நிதி கொண்டு EFI அமைப்பால் புனரமைக்க பட்டு இன்று 30% அதிக நீர் தேக்கும் திறனுடன் காட்சி அளிக்கிறது மிளகாத்தம்மன் ஏரி.

The restoration journey of Milakathamman Lake was no small feat. Over the past months, extensive efforts were made to clear garbage and invasive weed species that had plagued the lake for years. Desilting of the lake bed was carried out, enhancing its water storage capacity by 30%. New embankments have been built to enhance structural integrity and prevent erosion, while recharge pits and nesting islands were constructed to support all lifeforms.

Today, Milakathamman Lake has evolved into a vibrant aquatic ecosystem with a diverse array of bird species and other wildlife. The revitalization efforts have not only improved water quality but have also created a balanced habitat, fostering a rich biodiversity that enhances the local environment.

As we inaugurated the Milakathamman Lake, we celebrated not just the hard work that went into this project but also the promise of a healthier future for Kelambakkam. This lake is more than just a body of water; it is a symbol of our commitment to preserving our natural heritage.
