The Valayaputhur – Vedanthangal Water Project 2024 – Restoring the lifeline of Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.

E.F.I’s efforts in Chengalpattu district have been substantial, encompassing the restoration of 45 lakes and the nurturing of 6 thriving forests. We are now embarking on another restoration project aimed at enhancing greenery in the Chengalpattu region.

The Valayaputhur Lake, a critical water source, is connected by a 1.4 km long canal to the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary in the Chengalpattu district serves as a welcoming stop for migratory birds visiting the sanctuary and is of significant ecological importance as it supports the region’s rich avian population.

Sadly, years of neglect had taken a toll on the lake and the canal. Piles of non-biodegradable waste choked its edges, while invasive weeds suffocated the native vegetation. Encircled by agricultural lands and farmhouses, the lake and the canal are essential water bodies requiring conservation efforts. To revive this vital water system, E.F.I implemented a two-pronged approach.

Firstly, the southeastern part of the Valayaputhur Lake was de-weeded, removing approximately 2 tons of solid waste and invasive plant species. This was followed by leveling the uneven soil bed to ensure uniform soil distribution. Fifty native tree saplings, including Neem, Poovarasan Maram, Poomaruthu, Pungan, and Shenbagam, were planted. These trees will act as a green haven, providing much-needed habitat for various species and fostering richer biodiversity.

Secondly, various restoration activities such as de-weeding, garbage and boulder removal, desilting, and leveling of the canal were carried out along the entire 1.4 km length to ensure the smooth flow of water from the Valayaputhur Lake to the Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary.

We thank the Chengalpattu District Administration and Renault Nissan Technology & Business Centre India (RNTBCI) for supporting this restoration. Take a look at all that has happened during its restoration!
