The Pandeshwaram Lake, situated in the western suburbs of Chennai city near the Outer Ring Road, spans an area of 194 acres. This lake boasts a unique wetland ecosystem characterized by dense Acacia tree cover and is home to over 60 species of birds. Additionally, it supports over 100 acres of agricultural land. However, the lake has faced several challenges, including blocked inlets, steady siltation reducing its water holding capacity, excessive growth of invasive weeds, weak embankments, and encroachment on its southern part due to rapid urbanization in the surrounding areas.

Efforts to restore the Pandeshwaram Lake were undertaken by E.F.I & Caterpillar India, with administrative support from the Tamil Nadu Government. Various restoration processes were implemented to enhance the lake’s storage capacity and reclaim its periphery. Firstly, invasive weeds such as Prosopis juliflora, Ipomea carnea, and water hyacinth were removed. Segmented desilting of the lake bed, with an average depth of 4 ft, was conducted to deepen the lake and prevent future algal blooms. The desilted soil was then utilized to strengthen the bunds along a 2500 meters length of the lake.

Furthermore, embankments were reinforced, and dual embankments were established to enhance structural integrity. Break bunds were also installed on the foreshore region to demarcate boundaries and expand the lake’s water holding area. Additionally, nesting islands were constructed to promote local wildlife and provide habitat for avian and amphibian species. Native tree saplings were planted to enhance the green cover of the habitat.

As a result of these restoration efforts, the Pandeshwaram Lake now hosts a diverse variety of birds, including the Eastern Cattle Egret, White-throated Kingfisher, Black Drongo, painted stork, Common Myna and more.
The restoration of the Pandeshwaram Lake is expected to foster a flourishing ecosystem, providing a healthy habitat for all lifeforms.
