Nagpur, the heart of India, is a city where rapid urban growth meets a rich natural heritage. Sustained by its reservoirs, lakes, rivers, forests, and blue-green spaces, the city depends on healthy ecosystems for both people and wildlife. Flowing along its northern edge, the Kanhan River is a vital source of drinking water and a thriving freshwater ecosystem. Yet, years of unchecked sand mining, habitat degradation, and the spread of invasive Prosopis juliflora have put this lifeline under immense pressure. Towards restoring the river’s landscape, the E.F.I. in collaboration with the Government of Maharashtra and corporate partners, established NagVan – a native afforestation initiative that protects the riverbank from erosion, discourages illegal sand mining, and creates habitat for wildlife.
