Kayarambedu Chitteri Restoration, BlueGreenChengalpattu

When you step into Kayarambedu, it feels like a blend of the 1800s and the 21st century. Farmlands slowly give way to homes, forests stand beside wide waterbodies, and ancient temples sit within busy streets. Different times live together here. Once known for its natural wealth, the region today faces growing pressure from development, where land is valued more in money than in nature. In this mix of change, Kayarambedu Chitteri continues as a link to the past – rooted in nature, yet adapting to the present.

Important for agriculture, groundwater recharge, and biodiversity, the lake had fallen into neglect. E.F.I., in collaboration with the district administration, took up the restoration of Kayarambedu Chitteri and brought it back to life.

Encroachment, invasive weeds, garbage dumping, and weakened embankments once defined the story of Kayarambedu Chitteri. Today, through this restoration, the lake’s storage capacity has increased by 39%, strengthening embankments and transforming the waterbody into a resilient rainwater-harvesting reserve and a thriving habitat for local flora & fauna.
