Kazhipattur Lake sits at Chennai’s southern gateway, surrounded by hundreds of freshwater bodies, backwaters, and the historic Buckingham Canal. With rapid urbanization, many of these water bodies once vibrant ecosystems that recharged groundwater, mitigated flooding, and served as vital water sources have slowly fallen into neglect.

Invasive species like Prosopis juliflora and Eichhornia, along with garbage accumulation and silt deposits, have drastically reduced the lake’s water-holding capacity. Erosion along the bunds has further weakened the structure, threatening the stability and health of the entire ecosystem.
