#BlueGreenChengalpattu – Restoration of Kalvoy Raman Eri

Chengalpattu district, located in the northeastern part of Tamil Nadu, is known for its rich natural heritage, diverse landscapes, and vibrant ecosystems. Home to a mix of rural and rapidly urbanizing areas, the district lies close to the Bay of Bengal. Its coastal location and multiple r results in significant rainfall and exposure to cyclonic activity, contributing to the formation of numerous water bodies, wetlands, and green spaces. These ecosystems play a vital role in supporting biodiversity, agriculture, and groundwater recharge.

In recent years, Chengalpattu has witnessed remarkable environmental progress, thanks to the dedicated efforts of government officials committed to conservation. E.F.I has had the opportunity to work closely with the District Administration to conserve and protect countless water bodies, afforestation sites and engaged many citizens in environmental conservation work through volunteering activities.

Under the #BlueGreenChengalpattu initiative, we taken on the restoration of over 100 water bodies across the district in collaboration with the district administration. This large-scale effort aims to conserve and rejuvenate ecologically significant water bodies. The restoration activities include increasing the storage capacity through desilting, and removing accumulated garbage, sewage, and invasive weeds that pollute the lake ecosystems. Boundaries are established through protective fencing, along with the removal of encroachments. Structural integrity is enhanced by constructing and strengthening embankments. Additionally, groundwater recharge and biodiversity are improved by establishing recharge pits and creating nesting habitats to support local flora and fauna.

The Kalvoy region, located in the Chengalpet District, is a region that is blessed with a plethora of natural ecosystems, ranging from numerous mountains, lakes, ponds, and jungles. One is sure to find a water body within a short radius. The Kalvoy Raman Eri is one of these water bodies that adorn the region.

Take a look of all restoration efforts happened at Kalvoy Ramar Lake.

Right after the restoration, the rains arrived as a blessing,
filling the lake with the precious blue elixir of life.
