E.F.I’s BlueGreen Tamil Nadu – A Consolidated Impact Report

From the newly established lake in North Chennai to the restoration of the historic Anantha Victoria Marthandam Canal in Kanyakumari, E.F.I.’s BlueGreen Tamil Nadu initiative has been working towards the conservation and restoration of the state’s blue-green ecosystems for over two decades, in collaboration with the Government of Tamil Nadu, restoration partners, volunteers and local communities.

With work spanning 23 districts, over 314 water conservation projects and 60 afforestation projects, the initiative brings together a diverse range of conservation interventions. These include restoring lakes, ponds, rivers and canals, establishing urban forests, developing sponge parks, installing clean-energy aerators, strengthening groundwater recharge and implementing flood mitigation measures. Rural sustainability is further supported through BlueGreen Gramam, which promotes decentralized solutions such as soak pits, magic pits, recharge wells and biogas plants. Complementing these on-ground efforts are public engagement and environmental education initiatives such as #RakeLake, #OhShunTrash, #SchoolWaale, Lakes on Wheels, Container Museums, #OceanStations and #WALL-E, encouraging the larger public to actively participate in environmental conservation. Together, these efforts reflect a collective vision of restoring Tamil Nadu’s natural heritage, strengthening ecological resilience
and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
