EFI’s OceanStation, Chennai — transforming a 25-year-old library into a vibrant marine education hub!

In a city where the ocean hums a constant rhythm, the Marina Beach has always been more than just a landmark – it’s a living, breathing ecosystem for diverse marine species such as Olive ridley sea turtle, ghost crabs, different species of dolphins, whale shark, sea birds, jellyfish and more.

We are thrilled to unveil EFI’s Ocean Station, a transformative initiative by the Environmentalist Foundation of India, in collaboration with the the Department of Public Libraries. What was once an old library building, constructed back in 2000 has now been rejuvenated and reimagined into a vibrant hub of ocean awareness and marine conservation.

We thank Thiru Udhayanidhi Stalin, Honourable Deputy Chief Minister & Thiru Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi Honourable Minister for School Education for inaugurating EFI’s Ocean Station at Branch Public Library, Marina Beach.

The Ocean Station stands out with its vibrant marine-themed walls. From whale sharks to dolphins, each species is beautifully painted and labeled, making the space both eye-catching and educational. The artwork brings together marine species from both the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, visually celebrating the richness of India’s coastal biodiversity.

One of the highlights is a mural showing the life cycle of the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle, an endangered species that nests right here on our shores. Through this visual storytelling, we aim to foster empathy and understanding for these ancient mariners who’ve shared our planet for millions of years.

Step inside, and you’ll find more than just books. A wall-mounted flip infographic piece introduces visitors to the endangered marine species found along Chennai’s coastline. It’s interactive, informative, and designed to spark curiosity in minds of all ages.

We’ve also installed a television screening space, where visitors can watch nature documentaries and short films that highlight marine biodiversity, the threats it faces, and the urgent need for conservation. It’s a place to sit, watch, and reflect on our relationship with the ocean.

Learning with a Purpose

The Ocean Station isn’t just a space—it’s a mission. We plan to host school orientation sessions, where students will be introduced to topics like:

  • The importance of marine ecosystems
  • Ocean protection and conservation
  • The impact of plastic pollution on marine life
  • The stories of Chennai’s own coastal creatures

By creating a connection between young minds and the marine world, we hope to cultivate the next generation of ocean guardians.

The ocean gives us life. It regulates our climate, supports countless species, and provides livelihoods for millions. Yet, it’s under immense threat. Through the Ocean Station, we hope to not only spread awareness but also instill a sense of shared responsibility.

This is more than a library makeover. It’s a beacon of hope for our coastal city. A space where art, science, and community come together for the ocean.

We welcome you to visit the Ocean Station, breathe in the salty air, soak in the colors of the sea,
and leave with a little more love for the blue world that surrounds us.
