Vilankurichi, located in the northeastern region of Coimbatore, is rapidly growing into the city’s IT hub. Merged to the Corporation, this neighborhood enjoys good connectivity and plays a significant role in the city’s development. However, amidst the urban growth, the area remains blessed with natural resources, including farmlands, lakes, ponds, and canals that help maintain the region’s ecological balance.

A Victim of Urbanization

A crucial water body in Vilankurichi is the Vilankurichi Pond, a 3.6-acre ecological hotspot. Once a vital groundwater source for the residents, the pond had deteriorated over the years due to improper maintenance.

Invasive species like Prosopis Juliflora, Ipomoea Carnea, and thorny shrubs overgrew, replacing native plant species. Additionally, the pond became a dumping ground for solid waste and construction debris.

Restoration Efforts & Innovative Measures
June 2022

To restore the pond, massive restoration efforts were taken by E.F.I in collaboration with NTT Data and the Government of Tamil Nadu.

• Garbage Clearance
• Desilting
• Construction of Sedimentation tank
• Construction of Islands
• Triple-layer Embankment
• Protective Fencing

Over 36 tonnes of invasive weeds were cleared and 6 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste and debris were removed.

Excess silt was excavated to increase the pond’s water storage capacity and improve groundwater recharge.

Innovative measures were implemented to further enhance the pond’s health by creating tree island and a dump island with the excavated silt, offering nesting and spaces for birds and other species.

A sedimentation tank was built at the northern end of the pond to trap runoff and debris during rainfall, ensuring cleaner water flows into the pond.

To reinforce the pond’s embankments and prevent flooding, a triple-layer embankment was constructed around its periphery. This ensures enhanced water-holding capacity and improves the flood resilience of the pond.

Additionally, a protective fence was installed to deter waste dumping and human interference, safeguarding the pond from encroachments in the future.

Vilankurichi Pond as an Ecological Sanctuary

The ongoing monsoons in Coimbatore have brought good fortune by replenishing the Villankurichi Pond with abundant fresh water after many years. This restored pond is now effectively harvesting and conserving rainwater, supporting both the local biodiversity and the surrounding community. The pond is now home to Red wattled lapwings, egret, heron, drongo, rat snake and so much more!
