E.F.I’s Kanagam Eco Park Welcomes You

We thank the Greater Chennai Corporation for their administrative support.

The Kanagam Eco Park is situated in the northwestern area of Chennai, within the urban landscape of Anna Nagar. Covering an expanse of 3.5 acres, the park is located along the banks of the Cooum River, to the west of the Grand Northern Trunk Road.

Once a degraded land with garbage and invasive weeds, the area has been transformed into a biodiversity hotspot, thanks to the concerted efforts of E.F.I, Greater Chennai Corporation and Hexaware.

India’s First Ever Sports Integrated Eco Park

Key Highlights:

Traditional Tree Plantation

Recognizing the area’s vulnerability to cyclonic gusty winds crossing over in the nearby open areas of the Cooum River, the project opted away from the Miyawaki method, which favors fast-growing trees. Instead, the focus is on the traditional tree plantation method with native trees that anchor to the ground, grow tall, and are better suited to local conditions.

820+ native plants of 25 berry-bearing, fruit-bearing and nectar-bearing varieties have been planted to improve biodiversity along the Cooum River.

Compost Yard

Compost Yard will process the organic waste from Kanagam and Koyambedu market to produce manure that adds nutrients to the soil and improves soil texture.

Information Boards

Kanagam Eco Park offers vital environmental, aesthetic, and recreational benefits. Situated in a floodplain area, the park plays a significant role in mitigating flood risk by acting as a natural detention basin to manage stormwater by storing and releasing it into the river. Additionally, it serves as a potential green space for carbon storage and sequestration within the concrete urban landscape of Chennai, thereby reducing the urban heat island effect.
