E.F.I’s Eco-Restoration of Tiruneermalai Chitteri – An Unknown Urban Water Paradise

District collector of Chengalpet , Thiru. Arun Raj IAS flagged off the restoration efforts of the Tiruneermalai Chitteri, along with the Commissioner of MEPZ Thiru. Alex Paul Menon IAS. District authorities and Tambaram corporation officials along with the WRD officials attended the event.

The Tiruneermalai Chitteri located on the western periphery of the Chennai Bypass road is being taken up for restoration by the Environmentalist Foundation of India with administrative permission from Chengalpet district collector.

The restoration’s focus is on reviving the waterbody to increase its storage capacity.

  1. Deweeding to remove invasive vegetation such as Ipomea and Prosopis juliflora
  2. ⁠Removal of garbage from the bund area
  3. ⁠Desilting of the lake to increase storage capacity
  4. ⁠strengthening of the embankment into a dual bund
  5. ⁠setting up of 5 nesting islands
  6. ⁠setting up of 7 snag points
  7. ⁠3 pendulum wells
  8. ⁠a percolation trench
  9. ⁠Outer fencing of the lake
  10. ⁠native plantation

The work is expected to be completed in 85 days. EFI is investing 50 lakhs to take up this project.

This collaborative conservation effort is aimed at supporting local ecology, prevent local flooding and above all protect a neighborhood lakes.
