Pallikaranai is a southern neighborhood in Chennai. A booming residential locality with lavish multistory apartments & large glass covered IT offices, adjacent to the ever busy OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road).
Pallikaranai is also infamously know for one of Chennai’s dump-yards, which was once part of the large wet land inside the city limits. A forgotten ecology that’s struggling to keep up with the “modern man”.

Apart form the large marshland, Pallikaranai is also home to several lakes and ponds. In early 2019, E.F.I in association with the Greater Chennai Corporation (G.C.C) took on the restoration of an urban pond in Pallikaranai; The Pillaiyar Koil Pond.
Located on the Velachery-Tambaram main road, this pond was also exposed to urban abuse. E.F.I quickly got to work and began the restoration of the Pillaiyar Koil pond in July of 2019 prior to the Monsoons.
The transformation of the pond presented through photographs below:
We thank the Greater Chennai Corporation (G.C.C) for their administrative support.
Revival of such urban ponds is much needed given the climate change induced adversities that humanity is experiencing world over.
