Velachery is a busy southern neighborhood in Chennai. The transformation of Velachery from a marsh to a megalopolis look alike is 2 decades old. In this process of urban transformation, Velachery has also lost a few of its water bodies. In an effort to protect what is left, E.F.I has been working on reviving the Mandapam Kuttai.
வளர்ந்து வரும் வேளச்சேரியில் மீட்டெடுக்க பட்டுள்ள ஒரு நீர் ஆதாரம். வறண்ட வருங்காலம் தவிர்ப்போம் வாரீர்.
The pond underwent a restoration effort from Mid-July through August of 2019 and is now all ready for the upcoming North East Monsoons. Mandapam Kuttai depicts resilience and also the fact that when nature is given a chance, she bounces back in style. The story of revival in photos below.
- The Greater Chennai Corporation for the administrative support
- CREDAI Chennai for funding the restoration effort
- The residents of Velachery for voluntarily strengthening the effort
