E.F.I RESTORES PONDS IN AMBASAMUDRAM TALUK

Tirunelveli is best known for it’s halwa. More importantly known for it’s beautiful Thambirabarani. A river which once had a turbulent flow , now hardly has any water left . This summer has been tough, and has taken a toll on the lakes and rivers. E.F.I’s restoration efforts has been going strong for the past  3 months in the Ambasamudram Taluk.

MADAVARAYAN POND

This twelve and half acre pond is home for a lot of birds and has been drying up quite easily in the last two years. Located in Keezhambur , near Ambasamudram ,it has a beautiful community that wishes to restore this pond .E.F.I has joined hands with the local community in restoring  this beautiful pond . E.F.I worked for 10 days and mechanically restored the pond using machines. E.F.I thanks the public works department of Tirunelveli , it’s volunteer coordinators and the local community for their  persistent support in making this restoration a very fruitful one.

SEMBANKULAM

Home to  a lot of native trees and animals including deer, wild dogs ,this pond is one of the primary sources of irrigation for agriculture. This restoration is of key importance because replenishing this water body with fresh  water not only supports the farmers in this locality but also a wide variety of fauna and flora. E.F.I worked for 8 days to restore this pond  by creating and laying fresh bunds around this pond.

SEEVILAPERI KULAM

Located at Ravanasamudram, this 51 acres massive water body is closely situated near the Western Ghats and can serve the wildlife if de-silted and restored properly. There could be water throughout the year to support the flora and fauna. E.F.I worked for 10 days to restore this magnificent water body using machines ,it laid fresh bunds around the pond after thorough de-silting.

Advantages of a clean pond include:

  1. Temperature regulation
  2. Ground water percolation
  3. Prevention of waterborne diseases
  4. Localized climate change combat

E.F.I thanks the Public Works Department of Tirunelveli, it’s Volunteer co-ordinators and the local communities for supporting and strengthening E.F.I’s restoration efforts.
