Located in the Tiruvallur district on Chennai’s expanding western periphery, Pandeswaram Lake serves as a vital freshwater storage unit and groundwater recharge zone for nearby farming communities and surrounding residential areas. Rapid urbanization, improper waste disposal, heavy siltation, and unchecked growth of invasive weed species severely degraded the lake’s water holding capacity and altered its natural hydrological flow. To combat this decline, the Environmentalist Foundation of India (E.F.I), under the BlueGreen Tamil Nadu campaign, partnered with local authorities to execute a systematic ecological restoration. Through targeted de-weeding, perimeter desilting, embankment fortification, and boundary stabilization, the initiative successfully rejuvenated the lake into a resilient, self-sustaining waterbody.

The eco-restoration of Pandeswaram Lake illustrates the power of holistic, science-based water conservation within expanding urban ecosystems. By combining physical desilting and bund reinforcement with eco-friendly features like nesting islands and recharge wells, the BlueGreen Tamil Nadu initiative has secured long-term water resilience for Pandeswaram. Today, the restored lake acts as a protective shield against extreme weather events, sustains regional groundwater levels, and provides a flourishing green-blue sanctuary for local biodiversity.
