Tirunelveli is a southern Indian city blessed with a diverse landscape and the perennial Tamirabarani River, which traverses through the western and northern part of the district. As described in Tamil literature, the region is divided into five distinct landscapes: the mountainous “Kurinji,” the forested “Mullai,” the plains of “Marutham,” the coastal “Neithal,” and the arid “Paalai.” This rich tapestry has historically attracted numerous inhabitants to make Tirunelveli their home.
However, the region’s rapid development has brought about significant challenges. The influx of industries and factories has disrupted the delicate ecological balance, particularly impacting the city’s water bodies. Lakes and ponds have fallen victim to pollution, with rampant growth of invasive weeds like Prosopis juliflora and thorny shrubs. These water bodies that are vital resources have become degraded due to neglect and lack of maintenance.
