Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, is also known as the lake capital of India. From rivers, lakes, ponds, tanks, canals, reservoirs to wells, Chennai has a rich network of waterways. This abundance of water, however, paints an incomplete picture. Despite its impressive hydrology, Chennai grapples with the persistent issues of water scarcity and flooding.
The Greater Chennai Corporation area spans 426 sq.km and has an estimated total of more than 450 wetlands. Wetlands in Chennai face threats from degradation and encroachments due to rapid urbanization. These wetlands play a vital role in the hydrology of the city as they help in collecting floodwater and in recharging groundwater. Preserving them is crucial for sustainable water management in Chennai.
E.F.I. and the Greater Chennai Corporation have partnered for years to protect Chennai’s environment. We thank GCC for the administrative support extended.
