MADAMBAKKAM – A SECRET GEM IN THE WATER WORLD

Madambakkam lake in the southwest of Chennai is one of the largest lakes in the city and indeed a boon to be discovered for us at E.F.I.

A lake of tranquility which is hidden over 40 years amongst the neighborhood.

It is undeniably a natural paradise deteriorated due to the oblivious nature of mankind, yet awaited with a source of hope to bestow its unconditional resources. The lake was certainly imperiled to massive exploitation thus affecting the ecosystem directly and its dependents indirectly.

A collaborative effort between PWD, government of Tamil Nadu and Rotary club of Madras, south has facilitated E.F.I in reviving the lake of serenity. In the first week of restoration, solid waste and invasive weeds which pose a threat to the ecosystem were removed followed by desilting and construction of bunds to rejuvenate its ecological identity.

The beauty of Madambakkam lake has made us discover and innovate techniques in the journey of restoration. The methods implemented have been put forth to envision the process of our efforts in reviving the water body.

1. Construction of dual embankment prevents rapid soil erosion and protect the lake from further dumping of waste.

2. The adjacent recharge boxes in cascading pattern creates pressure points in the lake for faster ground water recharge.

3. The island with neem tree has been constructed to conserve the species and would be a natural nesting place for birds and other reptiles in near future.

The restoration work of the lake is still underway and eventually, this will not just be the lake view road without a lake in the vicinity. Once the restoration work is done our frequent visit to this natural paradise would not only feast one’s eyes but prevent further deterioration by mankind.
